Captain Underpants—Is The Skivvy Toss The New King Of Junior Hockey Promotions?
Don’t get your panties in a bunch, because a new charitable promotion is leaving skid marks all over junior hockey.
While you may not have seen pigs fly? Well, take a trip to the Outpost Ice Arena in Albuquerque, New Mexico and you’ll be able to check flying underpants off your bucket list as the New Mexico Ice Wolves Skivvy Toss has become a sensation.
Every team has its unique traditions. Texas Tech tosses tortillas, Ohio State crosses out every “M,” the Detroit Red Wings have their octopus, and the New Mexico Ice Wolves NAHL and NA3HL teams toss skivvies . . .underwear for anyone under the age of thirty.
The Skivvy Toss goes like this — hockey fans are asked to bring as many new packages of boy’s and girl’s underwear as they can to the game to be tossed onto the ice for a chance to win a prize. As the inventors, the Ice Wolves are skivvy toss pioneers in the sport of hockey. Once it’s tossed on the ice Chuck-a-Puck style, the underwear is collected and donated to Locker #505 Student Clothing Bank. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Albuquerque, New Mexico, provides school clothing to local K-12 students in need. For the past few years, underwear brand Chill Boys generously donated hundreds of pairs of underwear each year to the cause, helping the Ice Wolves give back to their community. Delivering “comfort where it counts” as Chill Boys tagline states.
In the 2024-25 season the Ice Wolves collected just over 1,600 pairs of underwear through their unique Skivvy Toss promotion. That’s 1,600 pairs of underwear going to children in need and quite possibly changing those deserving kids' lives.
Hockey purists worried that the Skivvy Toss has replaced the age-old tradition of Chuck-A-Puck need not worry. The Ice Wolves still chuck those pucks every game with the exception of Skivvy Toss night. But, to be honest, there really is no comparison as the rush you get from tossing some underwear onto a sheet of ice is a feeling that just can’t be beat.
Hockey is more than just a sport, it’s a community; something the Ice Wolves organization strives to make an impact in. The team is consistently leading the league in player development and community involvement, and its annual partnership with Locker #505 is a leading contributor. Ice Wolves players get to see their contribution to the charity in action throughout the season, as they volunteer their time every month to help fold and sort the thousands of clothing donations Locker #505 receives.
The Ice Wolves do their part to give back to the community that supports them, and this insanely creative new promotion is just one of the many ways they do it.
