Stanzel’s Sports Takeout — BREAKING NEWS: 1.14.26
Watched a lot of football this weekend. The Vikings need a QB to play on this stage.
It’s time to say goodbye to Jordan Addison, Vikings. For the third straight off-season, Addison has found himself in jail, at least this time it was with the decency of not putting other lives at danger. Addison was arrested for trespassing at a casino at around 4 a.m. Monday. His flashes of brilliance - and that’s what they are, three years in, flashes - aren’t enough to make up for his lack of maturity and questionable decision making. He’ll probably go be a star somewhere else and so be it.
Loons moved quickly to promote Cameron Knowles to head coach. Knowles served as interim coach a couple seasons ago to begin the season, so he’s no stranger to quick turnarounds. He also ran MNUFC2.
Wolves Embarrass Bucks in Milwaukee
Without their star and their big man, the Wolves didn’t even breathe hard to beat the sinking Bucks in Milwaukee. Minnesota raced to an 18-point lead after 12 minutes and ripped the Bucks 139-106.
Anthony Edwards didn’t play to rest his foot and Rudy Gobert because of suspension, but Julius Randle scored 29 points and Bones Hyland (!) added 23 in just 21 minutes. Hyland also had five assists, zero turnovers and was a +41. All in 21 minutes, becoming the first player in Wolves history to be as high as +41 off the bench. He’s also the first player in team history with 20+ points, five-plus assists and zero turnovers off the bench.
Hyland’s emergence continues to make you think former top 10 pick Rob Dillingham’s days are numbered.
Without Gobert, we also got our first extended look at first-round pick Joan Beringer, who had 13 points, missed just one field goal and had five rebounds in 30 minutes.
The Wolves officially climbed into the top four in the West. They host Houston, a loser of three straight, on Friday.
Devils Rout Wild in Hughes Bowl
Hughes Bowl? More like Hughes Boo-wl. At least from a Wild fan’s perspective.
The Wild was non competitive, laying a rare stinker in a 5-2 home loss to the Devils on Monday as Quinn Hughes welcomed his two brothers to his new home ice.
Minnesota has quietly lost seven of its last 11 games. Thankfully, Dallas is going through it too right now.
The Wild hosts the last-place Winnipeg Jets on Thursday. Still weird to write that.
Gopher Hoops
Just a brutal home loss for the Gopher men, who led by 11 in the second half against Wisconsin but lost 78-75 on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by John Blackwell. That came just five seconds after Gopher star Cade Tyson had tied the game with a 3-pointer. Minnesota has lost two straight tough ones at home by a combined four points. They play at Illinois on Saturday.
When hosting No. 4 UCLA tonight, the Gopher women attempt their second straight top 25 upset after losing 39 in a row against top 25 teams.
