Stanzel’s Sports Takeout — BREAKING NEWS: 10.10.25
Byes for both the Vikings and Loons this week. The Vikngs will get a pissed off Eagles team a week from Sunday in their return stateside. Philly has lost two straight including an embarrassing loss to the Giants last night.
It’s homecoming at the U. The Gophers host Purdue as 8.5-point favorites Saturday. If you’re on campus you can check out a men’s hoops scrimmage too.
You watch the MLB playoffs and notice how far (duh) the Twins have to go, but especially in manufacturing runs. Home runs can’t win every playoff game as my favorite team can attest.
Hard to believe we’re in the final week of regular season high school football.
Wolves fall to 1-2 in the pre-season with a 100-95 OT loss last night in New York against KAT’s Knicks.
Wild Blasts Blues 5-0 in Season Opener
As I sat atop section 117 of what I’ll always call The X last night to watch Mumford and Sons, I stared down at what would be center ice and thought about seeing Lord Stanley there. I looked to the rafters to see where a Stanley Cup banner could go alongside No. 9.
Ok it was just one game.
But the Wild looked every bit a better team than last year, blistering the Blues 5-0 on the road last night. Two goals for Ryan Hartman - he flat out owns Jordan Binnington - and three points each for Matt Boldy (one goal, two assists) and Kirill Kaprizov (three assists).
In his first game since signing his mega extension, Filip Gustavsson made 26 saves, including all 14 in a frantic second period the Blues dominated.
It’s clear the Wild is going to bring “the kids” along slowly. This team has five former No. 1 draft picks under the age of 23. So it’ll be all the more important for Hartman to support the Boldys and Kaprizovs of the team.
Dean Evason will bring the Columbus Blue Jackets to town Saturday for the Wild’s home opener in their 25th season.
Gopher Hockey
The Gophers are in danger of sliding towards the bottom end of the top 20. No. 11 B.C. edged No. 12 Minnesota 3-1 in a rare Thursday game at Mariucci. Minnesota is 1-2, having scored only four goals in its last two games.
The series continues tonight before a much-anticipated weekend series at UND the following week.
The No. 3 Gopher women play a much-improved No. 10 St. Cloud State this weekend, with a home series against No. 2 Ohio State the next.
