Only The Takeout could get me to stop looking at Aurora last night…

Wild Lose 2-1 in OT in Game They Dominated

There was a time in Wild yesteryear when fans would accuse coaches of relying on veterans in overtime, ones who would stay on the ice too long and be outgunned by young stars on other teams. That situation was revisited last night as the Sharks rallied for a 2-1 OT win in a game the Wild dominated.

Mats Zuccarello, who is coming off an injury, was slow and/or a little nonchalant on a backcheck on Colin Graf’s game-winner. Macklin Celebrini, the former No. 1 pick, assisted on the goal and is well on his way to being a top 10 player in the NHL. Will Smith, who tied things up with eight minutes left in the third period, isn’t too far behind.

Despite coming off two straight wins and a shutout in his last start, Jesper Wallstedt sat on the bench in favor of Filip Gustavsson. The Gus Bus is the No. 1 goalie of course, and he’d have been facing a long time without games if he sat, but you don’t find many coaches who don’t start the guy who just pitched the shutout.

Matt Boldy scored for the Wild.

The Wild, which blew the first four games of a six-game homestand last month, is now 1-0-1 on this five-game homestand that continues Saturday against Anaheim. The Wild has points in three straight games overall (2-0-1).

Wolves Catching Fire Heading Back Home

The Wolves’ 2-3 start seems like a moon cycle ago (it was) They’re in the midst of a three-game winning streak including a 120-113 win at the Jazz on Monday.

The Wolves used a 40-25 third-point bulge to take control in Utah. Minnesota has been able to rest some starters recently in blowout wins, so I’m not too concerned about the lack of bench play Monday. Anthony Edwards, just another 35-point, six-rebound, six-assist performance. Julius Randle had 27 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. There aren’t many 1-2 punches in the NBA like the Wolves have.

Now, Minnesota must start playing better at home. They’re 5-2 away from Target Center, and just 2-2 at The House A-Rod May Tear Down heading into Friday’s game against Sacramento. That kicks off a four-game homestant that includes a Saturday game against Denver. Not an easy back-to-back, even with no travel.

GWBB Blasts Marquette

The Gopher women may be pretty darn good. Marquette was picked to finish near the top of the Big East, and they didn’t stand a chance against the Gophers last night. The Gophers won 90-47 to move to 3-0 in the teams’ first meeting since 1997.

Nineteen points and eight rebounds for Grace Grocholski. We still haven’t seen the best of the Gophers, who will not get much of a test Friday against the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

The Gopher men’s hoops team is 2-0 heading into tonight’s game at Missouri.
