Wallstedt Gets Another Shutout

They’re running out of superlatives for Jesper Wallstedt. The Wild’s so called “backup” goalie recorded his fourth shutout in six games and remained undefeated on the season, making 33 saves in a 1-0 win at Edmonton last night. Jonas Brodin’s goal gave the Wall of St. Paul all the support he’d need.

What makes the win all the more special is the fact the Oilers could have drafted the Swede, but passed him over. Oilers fans are losing their minds, and we like it when that happens.

Wallstedt is 8-0-2 this season, with seven straight wins. He’s the first NHL goalie in more than 61 years to have 10 shutouts by the time he reached 10 career wins.

As a team, all the Wild has done is go 10-0-2 over the last 12 games, trailing for only 38 minutes.

Yet they’re STILL nine points behind the white-hot Avs for first in the Central. Minnesota visits Calgary, tied for last in the West, tomorrow night.

Wolves Need OT to Clip Pelicans

Not the way you want to beat a three-win team, but it’ll count just the same as a blowout win come April.

Anthony Edwards scored 44 points and forced overtime with a layup late in regulation, as the Wolves went on for a 149-142 win at New Orleans last night. The two teams play again Thursday evening.

How about these numbers from OptaStats? In just the second half of the last six games, ANT has more than 150 points, 50 field goals and 25 free throws. The last player to do that in six straight second halves? Kobe Bryant in 2007.

Overall, he’s got 31 or more in each of the last six games, including three games of 40-plus.

In the top heavy West, the Wolves will need to start beating good teams. They are 13-8 but just a half game out of the play-in round at the quarter mark of the season.

Gopher Hoops

The Gopher men begin Big 10 play against No. 25 Indiana tonight at The Barn. The already thin Gophers learned yesterday that starting point guard Chansey Willis, Jr., will miss the remainder of the season due to injury.

The 6-2 Gopher women ripped Samford 77-40 on Monday and begin B10 play Sunday at home against Maryland.
