Stanzel’s Sports Takeout — BREAKING NEWS: 4.28.26
Looks to be a Takeout-every-day-but-Thursday type of week!
The Wild should get Mats Zuccarello back, and perhaps Yakov Trenin, tonight in a pivotal Game 5 in Dallas. Game time is a much more manageable 7 p.m. I just hope the officials let the teams decide it. The Stars lose Nils Lundqvist for Game 5. Roope Hintz is doubtful to return.
Twin Cities will host a pair of Game 6’s Thursday.
A Cleveland fan dropped a home run ball and then stole it from the young girl who recovered it. Tampa’s broadcast came to the rescue with a new ball.
Lynx 2-0 in pre-season after an 88-79 win over the Nigerian national team last night.
Amazing story here from AP’s Steve Whyno. A Kentucky man, who happens to be the stallion manager for Spendthrift Farms, which owns leading Derby contender Further Ado, found out he had a non cancerous tumor from his reaction to the Giants kicker flubbing a kick this season.
Nuggets Cruise to Force Game 6
Whatever ratings were possible for a 9:50 p.m. central time tip for the Wolves quickly went downhill.
With an already depleted roster, Jaden McDaniels picked up two fouls in the first minute-plus and Denver quickly took advantage in a season-saving, 125-113 Game 5 win at Ball Arena.
Game 6 is back at Target Center on Thursday at either 8 or 8:30.
With Anthony Edwards and Donte DiVincenzo out, McDaniels was one of two guys they couldn’t afford to lose for a quarter. But his second foul - an offensive foul that Chris Finch challenged - sent the Wolves into a spiral. Through five minutes, the Wolves had more turnovers than field goals. Through the first 20 minutes of the games, the Wolves turned the ball over 14 times.
Although the Wolves briefly made things competitive in the second quarter, Denver led by nine at the half, and a 37-24 bulge in the third put things away.
Nikola Jokic finally got the better of Rudy Gobert (27 points, 16 assists, 12 rebounds), and Jamal Murray added 24 points despite missing 14 field goals.
McDaniels finished with 13 points and four turnovers, playing just 27 minutes before fouling out. Julius Randle led Minnesota with 27 points. Anytime Bones Hyland and Terrance Shannon, Jr., combine for 30 points, it’s not going to be a great night for the Wolves, who turned the ball over 25 times.
No help is coming in the next two games. Reading between the lines of Finch and some local reporters, there’s a possibility ANT could return maybe late in a round two series. But they’ve got to get there, first.
Twins Beat Mariners to Open Homestand
The Twins were welcomed back to Target Field by a smattering of fans and a cold rain, but that didn’t stop them from an 11-4 win over Seattle in the opener to a seven-game homestand.
Kody Clemens hit a homer and drove in five runs, Byron Buxton also homered and Connor Prielipp picked up his first major league win. The lefty allowed two runs in five innings.
Joe Ryan on the mound tonight as the Twins try to make it two in a row.
