Stanzel’s Sports Takeout — BREAKING NEWS: 5.12.26
Hold up on that Friday Game 6 party in the Cities, the Wild hasn’t done its part, yet…
Frost and Victoire deciding Game 5 last night was postponed because Montreal had a half dozen players ill. The teams will play tonight, allegedly. I’m torn on this…hard to see it happening in the NHL, NBA or any other league. And will Montreal’s situation be THAT much better tonight than it was 24 hours prior? Keep in mind, the PWHL got flack from at least Taylor Heise for scheduling three games of this series in four nights, including back-to-back. If the Frost wins, the two-time defending Walter Cup champs will play Ottawa for another title; it would be the first time in six playoff series Minnesota has had home ice.
Pivotal Game 5 tonight in San Antonio between Wolves and Spurs. Series tied 2-2. Tipoff a little after 7 p.m. on NBC. No suspension (as predicted here) or no fine (strange since it’s the standard for this foul) for Wemby. The Thunder officially waits the winner ater sweeping the Lakers and potentially ending LeBron’s career.
Avs Take 3-1 Series Lead
Sure, you can talk about two big third-period turnovers, one by the goalie and one from a third-pair D. But the Wild just wasn’t good enough top to bottom - especially top - and now faces a Game 5 elimination game after losing 5-2 at Grand Casino Arena last night. It was a close game - two empty-netters late. The Wild must win Game 5 in Denver on Wednesday to keep the series alive.
The Wild couldn’t hold a 1-0 lead after a power play goal from Danila Yurov. They went more than 12 minutes to begin the second period without even a single shot - that eventually came from Yurov again when shots were 20-4 Colorado.
And they were outscored 2-1 at even strength in the third, with every and all chances the Wild had to score in the final 40 minutes coming from their bottom six forwards. Not long after Nico Sturm tied things up to ignite a relatively tame crowd, Parker Kelly converted after a Zach Bogosian turnover that came because of Kelly closing in on the forecheck.
Kirill Kaprizov had two shots attempted - only one on net. Two for Mats Zuccarello. Matt Boldy shot the puck five times and it went on net just once. Boldy has just an empty net goal and 10 shots on net in the four games of this series. In fact, the Olympian’s last three goals all have come without a goalie in net.
The other team gets a say of course. Jared Bednar looked smart with his goalie change to Mackenzie Blackwood, who got his first start of the post-season. Cale Makar and Jonathan Toews outperformed Quinn Hughes and Brock Faber.
