Stanzel’s Sports Takeout — BREAKING NEWS: 5.26.26

NBA Finals will be fascinating whomever survives the West. They’ll be tired and beat down, and the Knicks, who’ve won 11 straight playoff games, will be well rested.

It feels dirty to root for John Tortorella, but we really can’t root for Colorado can we? Would be tough to potentially see Brent Burns’ career end in a playoff sweep, though.

Short week, back Friday.

White Sox Stop Surging Twins

Playing .500 ball is not going to put the Twins ahead of Cleveland, but it just may make them a playoff team.

Following the Twins’ first Fenway Park sweep since 1994 - more on that in a moment - they dropped a 3-1 Memorial Day game to the White Sox in Chicago. Had the Twins won, they’d have moved to the .500 mark on the season. Joe Ryan on the mound tonight.

Despite the loss, it was a good start for Zebby Matthews, and maybe more importantly two more shutout innings from Simeon Woods Richardson. Brooks Lee homered for the Twins.

How long had it been since the Twins won three in Boston? Roger Clemens was at both series…he was a losing pitcher in 1994, and he threw the first pitch out to son Kody this past weekend.

Royce Lewis, by the way, continues to tear the cover off the ball in St. Paul.

Lynx 4-2 After Beating Chicago

Entirely new roster, and still no Napheesa Collier, and it’s pretty much business as usual for the Minnesota Lynx

Minnesota won for the fourth time in five games since dropping the season opener, beating Chicago 85-75 on the road Saturday. Natasha Howard, who returned to the team she played for in 2016-17 as a free agent, scored 26 points (she’s averaging 17) and grabbed 14 rebounds. There’s some growing pains with No. 2 pick Olivia Miles (4-for-14 shooting, five turnovers, but also nine rebounds and five assists), who added 14.

The Lynx return home - where they’re 3-0 - on Wednesday to face Atlanta. The Dream is 4-1 - just ahead of the Lynx and three other 4-2 teams.

Loons Winless in Four at World Cup Break

It will be two and a half months, at least, between Minnesota FC wins.

The Loons played to a 1-1 draw with Salt Lake on Saturday, but they’re now winless in four straight with the World Cup break upon us. Minnesota hasn’t won since May 2 and won’t play again until July 22.

Kelvin Yeboah was essentially suspended for something that happened during practice last week. His replacement, Mauricio Gonzalez, did score the tying goal in extra time.

Minnesota would host a wild card game if the season ended today.
