Stanzel’s Sports Takeout — BREAKING NEWS: 6.8.26

Detroit star Dylan Larkin reportedly has requested a trade. It won’t be cheap to get him (and he’s $8.7 million for five more years), but he’s a good friend of Quinn Hughes, who needs to be re-signed. Larkin would be the No. 1 center the Wild truly hasn’t had in 26 years.

Toronto may have overpaid when getting Simeon Woods-Richardson back from the Twins for cash (it wasn’t much cash). SWR came to the Twins in the Jose Berrios trade.

No one really knows what goalie interference is, but not a great move by John Tortorella challenging a no goal call with five minutes left in a tied Game 2. Canes win in OT, and the series is now tied 1-1.

KAT sure did better against Wemby than most others. When the Knicks, up 1-0, win this series, remember who picked them.

Miles Hits WNBA Rookie Record 8 3’s as Lynx Win Sixth Straight

Move over Caitlin Clark, there’s a new 3-point rookie record holder in the WNBA.

Olivia Miles, who we’ve watched become a star in just a month, hit a league rookie record eight 3-pointers on her way to a career-high 28 points, as the Lynx rallied past Golden State 87-84 last night at Target Center. Minnesota has won six straight, and its 8-2 record leads the WNBA. The Lynx hosts last-place Seattle tomorrow.

Many Lynx fans poo pooed the Miles pick earlier this year because they wanted UCLA big Lauren Betts. They’re all quiet now, because Miles is well on her way to be one of the best players in Lynx history. After 10 games!

Minnesota trailed by five with seven minutes left but scored the game’s next 11 points.

Miles also had seven assists, four rebounds, three blocks and more importantly just one turnover. She was named the WNBA Rookie of the Month for May. She’s averaging 17 points, 4.9 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 1.5 steals.

Twins Lose to Last-Place Royals

Getting beaten at home by the last-place Royals isn’t a way to show you can be an AL Wild Card team.

Minnesota blew a two-run lead in the middle innings, and the Twins bullpen gave up the go ahead run in the ninth as the Royals beat the Twins 8-6 in a rain-delayed game that ended late last night at Target Field.

Taylor Rogers allowed the first two runners to reach base in a tie game in the ninth, and Justin Lawrence yielded a two-run single to put the Royals on top for good.

The Twins bullpen has been decent as of late, but with injuries to the starting rotation, a game like this (seven pitchers used) can set them back especially as they begin this important four-game series.

Kody Clemens hit two homers and Byron Buxton hit his 18th for the Twins, who went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position.

The Twins scored exactly one run in each of the first six innings - the first MLB team to do that since they did it a year ago.

Minnesota is 29-35 but still only two games out of the wild card. Of course, the Twins are only 3.5 out of last place in the Central. Zebby Matthews gets the call tonight.

Frost Keeps Heise, Pannek, Rooney; Could Lose Captain to Expansion

The PWHL is expanding to 12 teams which will mean a new-look Frost team. They unsurpisingly protected Kelly Pannek and Taylor Heise - the league’s top two scorers - and goalie Maddie Rooney. It’s a longer process and not just an expansion draft - seems a good bet they’ll lose at least captain Kendall Coyne-Schofield and defender Lee Stecklein to expansion free agency. They can only lose three in free agency and then can protect more players before the expansion draft.
