Stanzel’s Sports Takeout — BREAKING NEWS: 6.22.26
Nolan Fitzhenry of Andover decommited from the Gophers and will instead enroll at UND this fall. Fitzhenry is a potential first-round pick next June - huge loss for Minnesota.
American hockey stars are fleeing Canada at a record rate. Brady Tkachuk demanded a trade from Ottawa and will join his brother in Florida. The Panthers missed the playoffs last year after back to back Cups. The Wild were one of the four teams Brady gave the Sens as a choice. They apparently made a big offer, but Brady was always going to join Matthew, joining Quinn Hughes as top American stars who have asked for trades out of Canada.
Wyndham Clark is certainly unlikeable, but shame on golf fans for treating him like he treated the Oakmont clubhouse last year (too soon?) For real, golf fans need to chill the eff out and bring some civility back to the game. One of the more boring majors I can remember, as Clark won the tournament with a two-hour run last Thursday.
After beating Australia 2-0 Friday afternoon, the Americans will play Turkiye in a game that doesn’t matter for either team late Thursday. The U.S. has clinched first place in their group, which gives star Christian Pulisic an extra week of rest heading into the round of 32. The Americans are likely to play the winner of Bosnia/Herzegovina and Qatar.
Twins Continue Torrid Play, Within a Game of Wild Card
The Twins have now won six of seven after a 5-1 road trip that culminated with two wins in Phoenix. That moved Minnesota to one game out of the wild card. The Twins officially hit the season’s midway point Tuesday when they host the Dodgers. The series opens tonight at Target Field.
After a 16-8 shellacking of the Diamondbacks on Saturday (Byron Buxton grand slam in a 10-run inning), the Twins had to rally from two down in a 4-2 series clinching win yesterday. Another three hits from Ryan Kreidler.
Shohei Ohtani oughta bring some people out to Target Field this week. There’s an expected strike among food service workers tonight.
Mystics Cool off Lynx
The Lynx were sloppy Sunday, losing 84-79 at home to Washington in a game they’ll wish they had back later this season. Minnesota led by seven at halftime, but a 28-19 Washington fourth quarter sealed the deal.
The Lynx has lost twice in five games. Not exactly a cause for concern, but this team has set high expectations.
Minnesota gets a rematch Wednesday in Washington.
