Stanzel’s Sports Takeout — BREAKING NEWS: 7.11.25
If they’re calling Paul McCartney one of the biggest shows in Minnesota history, he’d better bring John Lennon out.
You won’t find two better major semifinals than this morning at Wimbledon. American Taylor Fritz and Carlos Alcaraz just got underway, followed by top-seeded Janik Sinner and six-time Wimbledon champ Novak Djokovic.
Wolves draft pick Joan Berenger blocked two shots on the first possession of his NBA Summer League debut, and tied a league record with seven blocks overall yesterday.
A rough week for sports on Jeopardy! In the same episode, contestants thought Paige Bueckers was Caitlin Clark, and contestants went 0-for-3 knowing how many points a football team gets for a safety.
Minnesota Aurora hosts Utah in the national semifinals Saturday at TCO in Eagan. The Loons host Seattle on Saturday.
Rough year for former Wild blueliner Matt Dumba. Healthy scratch in every Stars playoff game in the first year of a hefty two-year contract, and yesterday he got traded to Pittsburgh…while on his honeymoon. Jordan Staal was traded on his wedding weekend in 2012, the same year the Wild took Dumba in round one.
Twins Falter in Series Finale; Ryan/Skenes Tonight at Target Field
It’ll be plenty Hot in Herre tonight at Target Field when two of the top young pitchers in the game face each other. Joe Ryan and potential Cy Young favorite Paul Skenes toe the rubber as a prelude to the post-game Nelly concert.
The Twins are coming off yesterday’s 8-1 loss to Chicago, as their attempt at a series sweep of the Cubs went only as far as Chris Paddack’s right arm.
Both Ryan and Skenes could conceivably see themselves in another team’s uniform in August. I don’t necessarily think Ryan will get traded, but there will be plenty of offers. The Red Sox are among teams reportedly interested. The Pirates are fading - they’ve lost six in a row, and only the White Sox and Rockies have fewer wins than them. It’s hard to trade the best pitcher in baseball, but there will also be plenty of offers.
Byron Buxton was hit by a ball in the hand on Wednesday and didn’t play yesterday, but he appeared to escape serious injury.
Lynx Split West Coast Matinees
The Lynx rebounded from their third loss of the season Wednesday in Phoenix with a 91-82 win at Los Angeles yesterday. Both games were matinees.
Natisha Hiedeman scored 18 points off the bench in less than 19 minutes for the Lynx against the Sparks. Minnesota got 17 points from Napheesa Collier and 16 from Courtney Williams. The Wolves struggled early but broke things open as they often do in the middle quarters - they enjoyed a 58-33 advantage in the second and third yesterday.
The 18-3 Lynx play road games in Chicago on Saturday and Monday.
