Stanzel’s Sports Takeout — BREAKING NEWS: 7.7.25

Greetings from Myrtle Beach, S.C. Last night’s Myrtle Beach Pelicans game may have been a loss for the Cubs’ Class-A team, but it rained and I didn’t have to pull tarp, so I won. The Pelicans were the first pro team to pay me to work back in 1999. Hope to swing the golf clubs tomorrow. The Loons beat Dallas 2-1 on Saturday. It’s a busy week, with their lesser players facing Holstein Keil in an international friendly tonight, and a U.S. Open Cup game versus Chicago on Tuesday at Allianz Field. Regular season play returns Saturday at home against San Jose.

Lynx Move to 17-2 with Back-to-Back Wins

It’s not the toughest stretch of opponents, but the Lynx just keep rolling in regular season play, winning back-to-back games at Target Center Saturday against Golden State and Sunday versus Chicago.

The Lynx moved to 17-2 - they’re a whopping 4.5 games ahead of any other WNBA team. They play at Phoenix on Wednesday.

Yesterday against the Sky, Minnesota fell down 24-10 after one quarter but had already taken the lead at halftime. All-Star reserve Courtney Williams scored 25 points and All-Star captain Napheesa Collier had 21, and the Lynx were able to offset 20 points from former Gopher and Minnesota high school standout Rachel Banham and a 16-point, 17-rebound, six assist performance from Angel Reese.

Twins Take Two of Three from Tampa Bay

The Twins started a crucial nine-game homestand before the All-Star Break by taking two of three from Tampa Bay, although the Twins lost 7-5 in 10 innings yesterday.

The most exciting game of the weekend came Saturday, when Brooks Lee’s squeeze bunt in the ninth inning gave the Twins the win.

Harrison Bader, who could be trade bait if the Twins fall any closer out of the playoff race, hit his 10th homer in yesterday’s loss. Byron Buxton hit his 20th homer to celebrate his being named to the All-Star team.

No game today, with the Cubs coming to town for three starting Tuesday.
