Stanzel’s Sports Takeout — BREAKING NEWS: 7.9.25

The 17-2 Lynx play a rare midweek afternoon game at the 13-6 Phoenix Mercury today.

Plenty of drama in the WNBA All-Star Draft, when Caitlin Clark picked her own teammates over Angel Reese, and traded head coach Cheryl Reeve over to Napheesa Collier’s team. They’re okay with that, of course. All-Star festivities are the weekend after this next one.

Twins Homer to 8-1 Win over Cubs

Simeon Woods Richardson threw five scoreless innings and the Twins hit three home runs in a six-run eighth inning to break open a close game, as Minnesota beat the Cubs 8-1 at Target Field last night. The Twins moved to 3-1 on this critical homestand before the All-Star break.

The Twins are four games out of the wild card - then again, all but four American League teams are - so it’ll be very interesting to see what happens before the trade deadline. Wili Castro, Harrison Bader and Ryan Jeffers each hit homers in the eighth last night. Castro and Bader could be tradebait.

Woods Richardson has a 1.38 ERA over his last five games.

It won’t be easy tonight against the Cubs, as David Festa and his 5.48 ERA takes the mound.

Loons Advance to U.S. Open Cup Semifinals

The Loons beat Chicago 3-1 ine extra time last night at Allianz Field to advance to the U.S. Open Cup semifinals, but you have to wonder at what cost. While Minnesota played its lesser players the prior night in an international friendly, their stars got plenty of action last night, with the team returning to MLS action this Saturday against San Jose.

Kelvin Yeboah scored twice in extra time for the Loons, who will meet Austin FC in the U.S. Open Cup semifinals in…mid-September.

Chicago did play down a man for the final 105 minutes.
