Stanzel’s Sports Takeout — BREAKING NEWS: 8.22.25
Loons at Salt Lake on Saturday.
Rory McIlroy made the wildest birdie you’ll ever see at The TOUR Championship, skulling a shot from the sand trap in front of the green, off the No. 18 grandstand and close enough to the pin to make the putt.
Paige Bueckers tied a WNBA rookie record with 44 points - she missed only four shots - in a Wednesday loss. She and Caitlin Clark are a lot closer than most people will admit. Bueckers invades Target Center on Labor Day.
Lynx Lose Back-to-Back Games for First Time this Season
It’s rare the Lynx get outscored in the fourth quarter, and it’s even rarer they lose back-to-back games.
Minnesota couldn’t hold a six-point lead after three quarters against Atlanta, and dropped back-to-back games for the first time this season as the Dream outlasted the Lynx 75-73.
The Lynx need Napheesa Collier back badly. Courtney Williams turned the ball over down two as time expired. DiJonai Carrington started out strong after the trade, but the defensive stalwart missed all three field goals in 10 minutes of action last night. She was -11.
Minnesota is still a likely regular-season championship winner, despite the Dream cutting the first-place lead to 5.5 games. Atlanta has eight games left, and Minnesota nine. Three other teams are lurking at seven games back.
Vikings Trade Harrison Phillips Ahead of Pre-Season Finale
You don’t get many shocking trades in the NFL, but Vikings Twitter was buzzing Wedneday afternoon with the word the team had traded defensive tackle Harrison Phillips to the Jets for a sixth-round pick. The teams also swapped late round picks.
Phillips was a starter the last three years. He was a captain on defense, and one of the most well liked players in the locker room and the community.
The Vikings have to eat half of Phillips’ $7.4 million contract. No corresponding move has come yet, but you have to think the rest of that money will be put towards a wide receiver in trade. I’m torn on Adam Thielen, but J.J. McCarthy needs another receiver especially with Jordan Addison out for the first three weeks. Thielen and McCarthy did work out together this summer at Woodbury High School (#localplug).
The Vikings play at Tennessee tonight in the pre-season finale. They open up the regular season on Monday Night Football at the Bears on Sept. 8.
Twins Swept by A’s
I once worked for a team that was headed nowhere, and the last six weeks of the season were miserable.
In a related note, the Twins were swept at home by the Athletics, including an 8-3 loss yesterday. Royce Lewis, the proudest guy not named Byron Buxton on this roster, was robbed of an extra base hit and took it out on his helmet, slamming it on the dugout floor three times.
The Twins are now the second-worst team record wise in the AL. They face the only team below them - the White Sox (they’re far below them) in Chicago for three. Time for a gut check.
