Stanzel’s Sports Takeout — BREAKING NEWS: 8.29.25
The world is heavy this week. Hold those you love close. This may be a more serious Takeout than usual.
I attended St. Thomas’ 35-13 win over Lindenwood, a 7-7 game until the Tommies faked a field goal on the first possession of the second half. Things get much harder next week at No. 12 Idaho.
Loons host Portland on Saturday. With six games left they’re just three points back of expansion San Diego FC for No. 1 in the West.
Last weekend without real NFL football till February. About an hour Wednesday after I told you Adam Thielen wasn’t a Viking, he was.
Gopher FB Beats Buffalo in Season Opener
The Drake Lindsey era is off to a winning start. The redshirt freshman, who played one game last year, threw for 290 yards in a 23-10 Gopher win over Buffalo of the Mid American Conference to open the season in Dinkytown last night.
The opponents will be tougher, of course. But Lindsey appears poised to be a solid QB, throwing for two TDs and completing passes to eight different receivers. Darius Taylor in the backfield doesn’t hurt; the vet raced for 141 yards on 30 carries.
The Gophers host Northwestern State next week.
Lynx Blow 21-Point Lead to Seattle
They’re still up five games with six to play - albeit five games up on a Vegas team that’s won 12 straight - but the Lynx’ 93-79 loss last night to Seattle will leave a bitter taste for some time.
Minnesota led by 21 in the third quarter, but allowed 60 second half points as Seattle made 16 3-pointers in the win. The Lynx have been a pretty deep team all season, but the starters played too many minutes in this one out of necessity. DiJonai Cunningham (six points, three fouls in 13 minutes) has not provided this team the defensive jolt she was supposed to have.
Napheesa Collier missed 16 of her 23 shots.
The Lynx plays at a 10-28 Connecticut team on Saturday.
Twins Lose Two of Three to Jays
The Twins haven’t done as much as split, much less win, their last five series. They just wrapped up losing two of three in Toronto.
The Twins led twice by three runs but two relievers combined to give up three runs in the eighth.
Minnesota sits 13 games under the .500 mark as they return home for three against the Padres.
