Stanzel’s Sports Takeout — BREAKING NEWS: 8.4.25
We finally get Vikings football this week - pre-season opener at home against the Texans on Saturday. I’d expect to see a little bit but not a lot of J.J. McCarthy.
Lynx Earn Biggest Road Win in WNBA History but Lose Collier to Injury
It was an action filled few hours for the Lynx on Saturday. They torched Vegas 111-58 - the largest road win by a team in WNBA history - but the win wasn’t without cost.
Star Napheesa Collier suffered an ankle sprain, with her team up 43 late in the third quarter and a sub at the scorer’s table waiting to check in. The Lynx didn’t update her condition on Sunday, although with a comfortable lead in the WNBA standings, it shouldn’t be of immediate concern.
In the overnight hours (at least after I went to bed), the Lynx announced they acquired guard DiJonai Carrington from the Dallas Wings in exchange for forward Diamond Miller, guard Karlie Samuelson and a 2027 second-round draft pick,
Carrington was on the All-WNBA defensive team last year and should fit in well with the defensive mentality of this team. Miller was the second pick in 2023 but has progressed slowly, and Samuelson won’t play again this season due to injury.
The Lynx lead the Liberty by 5.5 games with 15 games left, albeit with three straight contests between the teams beginning Sunday. Before then, Minnesota will visit Seatlte on Friday and host Washington on Friday.
Twins Salvage Third Game in Cleveland
The post trade-deadline Twins looked a lot like the pre trade-deadline Twins, at least on the scoresheet. Minnesota lost two of three games in Cleveland over the weekend, the fifth straight series that’s ended with a 1-2 mark.
Each of the Twins’ nine starters in the lineup has at least spent time in Minnesota this year. Kody Clemens now bats fifth. We’re going to see more of Eddie Julien.
The pitching staff is where it’s going to get interesting. The Twins became reliever Jose Urena’s fourth team (!) of 2025. He started Sunday’s 4-3 win. Michael Tonkin, a journeyman to say the least (he pitched from the Twins in 2013!) has three career saves and was handed the keys in a save situation yesterday. He didn’t make it out of the inning.
The Twins are at Central-leading Detroit for three this week.
Loons Falter in Draw with Club America
The Loons’ 3-3 draw against Club America in Houston in game two of Leagues Cup group play is one they’d like back. The Loons scored an own goal, and gave up a tying goal late against a team playing with 10 men.
With a win, they’d be a shoe-in for the knockout round of the Leagues Cup. Now, it’ll depend largely on their result Wednesday against San Luiz at Allianz Field.
