Stanzel’s Sports Takeout — BREAKING NEWS: 9.05.25
Too much late sports TV last night…
Vikings’ Harrison Smith (personal health) and Christian Darrisaw (knee) didn’t practice Thursday. Darrisaw did practice the day before, and you’d have to think he plays. Season opener at Chicago on MNF.
Nice to have real NFL football on TV last night. Jalen Carter is going to have a nice suspension for spitting in Dak Prescott’s face before the first play. Carter’s the guy who’s speeding at the University of Georgia caused a fatal accident. There’s a reason he fell in the draft.
Unbelievable night of tennis in Flushing, with Aryna Sabalenka outlasting Jessica Pegula, and Amanda Anisimova beating Naomi Osaka. Both matches went three sets, with the eventual winner dropping set one.
Wild training camp opens two weeks from yesterday.
Aces Best Lynx for 13th Straight Win
Two months ago, it looked like a foregone conclusion it would be the Lynx and Liberty in the WNBA Finals. Now, it’s hard not to envision a Lynx/Aces series.
Vegas got 31 points from A’ja Wilson and stifled Napheesa Collier (5-for-13 from the field) all night in a 97-87 win. The Aces have won 13 in a row - they can’t catch the Lynx, of course, and they’re in a three-way tie for second. But Vegas is clearly the danger heading into the post-season.
The Lynx has three games left, all on the road, sandwiching a game against Indiana between two versus Golden State. Speaking of the Fever, Caitlin Clark won’t play again this season. Indiana is a strong possibility for a first-round match-up.
Gophers Host Northwestern State
Minnesota hosts FCS member Northwestern State on Saturday at 11 a.m. It shouldn’t be close.
The BTN broadcast will have a Minnesota flare, with former Gopher QB Tanner Morgan on the call, and former Gopher golfer Emma Carpenter on the sideline. Morgan should be a great analyst, and Carpenter has been dabbling in TV with the PGA Tour.
Twins Swept by White Sox
The Twins’ horror season reached a new low last night, when they were swept in four games by the White Sox. Even with those four wins, Chicago still trails Minnesota by 10.5 games in the standings as the worst team in the American League (on paper, anyways).
The Twins lost 11-8 in a rain-delayed game last night, the night after Chicago won for the first time in more than 200 games when trailing after eight innings.
The lowest September crowd in Twins history saw them lose earlier this week. That won’t matter the next two series when they’re at Kansas City and Anaheim.
