Stanzel’s Sports Takeout — BREAKING NEWS: 8.19.26

Tuesday/Thursday Takeouts this week and next to fit in one last summer trip before school starts.

That sound you hear is the first couple days of fall prep sports practice…

You hate to see an oft-injured Jamal Adams, signed two weeks ago by the Vikings, go down with a season-ending knee injury in the first pre-season game, a 13-10 win at the Giants. The Vikings host Baltimore this Saturday. Good tickets still available for the lone home pre-season game!

Twins Turn it Around Against Braves

The Twins found an unlikely cure to their recent woes - the NL East leading Braves.

Minnesota snapped a three-game losing streak, beating Atlanta 4-2 at Target Field last night. Josh Bell keyed a four-run first inning with a two-run double, and four relievers combined to get the final 14 outs without a run. The Twins played without injured Austin Martin.

The Twins are 61-65 and are going to need to finish around the .500 mark to earn the final wild card. Someone is going to get hot in this race right? Right now six teams are within one game of the final spot - seven within two games. Just one of those teams (Toronto) is better than .500 in their last 10. It’s truly a war of attrition.

Old friend Tyler Mahle takes the mound against Zebby Matthews tonight. Matthews has allowed 33 runs in 34 ⅔ innings over his last seven starts.

Lynx Have Chance to Nearly Put Golden State Away on Wednesday

After beating third-place Vegas 92-87 on Saturday, the Lynx have a chance tomorrow in Golden State to pretty much assure themselves of the No. 1 seed and the WNBA regular season crown.

With eight games let, Minnesota is 29-7 and three games up on the Valkyries. They’re the two hottest teams in the league - four wins and six wins a row, respectively. While a four-game lead with seven games left wouldn’t be mathematically impossible to overcome, it would be quite the mountain to climb.

The teams play again Monday at Target Center, the third of four games left for the Lynx before the WNBA breaks for the horribly timed World Cup.

Loons Earn Draw, Still Winless in MLS Play Since First Saturday in May

The Loons were minutes away from another MLS loss when Joaquin Pereyra scored in the 89th minute against Salt Lake on the road Saturday to give the team a 1-1 draw.

That could be a step in the right direction for a team that hasn’t won an MLS game in eight matches dating back to May 2.

They’ll get maybe their best chance at a win in recent memory in a rare Wednesday game at Allianz Field. The Loons have a four-win, 15-point Atlanta team that’s in last place in the East and second-to-last in the league.
