Wild Blanks Ducks, Now Four Back of Playoff Spot

There will be more difficult opponents - one of them tomorrow - but the Wild with another solid 2-0 win over the Ducks at The X last night to move within four points of Vegas for the final playoff spot.

Zach Bogosian and Kirill Kaprizov each scored - Dolla Bill Kirill has more goals than ANYONE in the NHL (even Connor McDavid) since Jan. 19. Marc-Andre Fleury had a dramaless 17-save shutout, and 2020 second-round pick Marat Khusnutdinov impressed in his NHL debut. How inconsistent has this team been in the faceoff dot in its history? The crowd cheered Khusnutdinov when he won two straight draws.

The Wild is 5-0-1 in its last six, but now must face St. Louis on the road to kick off a three-game road trip tomorrow. The Blues are two points back of the Wild but have a game in hand. The road trip also includes a game in Los Angeles - the Kings are tied with Vegas - and the rather hapless Ducks.

Gopher Hoops Drops B10 Tourney Opener to Michigan State

Ben Johnson and his Gophers drew high praise from Michigan State coach Tom Izzo after yesterday’s 77-67 loss in the first round of the Big 10 Tournament. The Gophers actually led by two at the half before the Spartans’ depth took over.

Dawson Garcia led Minnesota with 19 points. If the Gophers’ improvement this season can help Johnson keep Garcia, Cam Christie and Elijah Hawkins around, next year can be a good one. Need some more role players though - the Gophers played only seven guys in the loss to the Spartans.

The Gophers seem to stand a good chance for a non NCAA post-season berth.

Big Weekend for Gopher Hockey

The Gopher women head to way northern upstate New York to face Clarkson tomorrow, with a berth in the Frozen Four on the line. These top tier East-West matchups that don’t often happen in the regular season are what makes the women’s NCAA Tournament so great.

The Gopher men host Michigan on Saturday in the single elimination Big 10 semifinals. Either Michigan State or Ohio State would await in next Saturday’s final.
