Stanzel’s Sports Takeout — BREAKING NEWS: 1.28.26
Watched a lot of football this weekend. The Vikings need a QB to play on this stage.
Wild Rallies from Three Down to Beat Hawks in Shootout
Big-time character win from the Wild last night. Down three after one of their worst starts of the season, Minnesota scored twice in the third, killed off three penalties in the final 25 minutes and beat Chicago 4-3 last night at the GCA.
The Wild wasn’t good at all in a first period that ended with Chicago holding a 2-0 lead. They started the second period great but allowed a deflating goal, and things looked bleak.
But Yakov Trenin scored late in the second period, and Joel Eriksson Ek and Jared Spurgeon both crashed the net for goals in the third. After killing two penalties in the third, Minnesota also went on the PK for the final 1:56 of overtime and survived, with Jesper Wallstedt making six saves.
Kirill Kaprizov scored the shootout’s lone goal.
The Wild has won nine straight home games against Chicago, and is 17-0-1 in the last eight overall against the once proud Blackhawks.
Minnesota hosts the struggling flames on Thursday. The Wild got within nine points of first-place Colorado, but the Avs somehow have four games in hand with three eighths of the season left
Marcus Johansson was selected as a very deserving injury replacement for next month’s Olympics.
Wolves Blow Out Shorthanded Warriors
The Wolves without Anthony Edwards were a whole lot better than the Warriors without Steph Curry (and others).
Minnesota blew out Golden State 108-83 Monday in the second half of their unscheduled back-to-back, as the Warriors rested most of their top stars. Edwards missed the game due to an infected toe that’s becoming a little concerning.
Julius Randle scored 18 points and Bones Hyland added 17 in Edwadrs’ stead as the Wolves had six players in double figures. Naz Reid rebounded from one of his worst games of the season to score 15, and he was a +30 to boot.
It doesn’t seem like much of a playoff rematch with the Mavs outside the top 10, but it’s a playoff rematch tonight in Dallas.
Gopher Hoops
The Gophers men visit Wisconsin tonight, while the women travel to Penn State.
