Stanzel’s Sports Takeout — BREAKING NEWS: 1.30.26

Watched a lot of football this weekend. The Vikings need a QB to play on this stage.

UND beats St. Thomas in men’s basketball last night, snapping the Tommies’ home win streak at 28 (spanning two arenas). It had been Division I’s longest home win streak.

Twins cut the cord with Edouard Julien, sending him to Colorado for a minor league pitcher.

Wolves Best the League’s Best

There’s a lot of steam about the Wolves’ interest in the Bucks’ Giannis, but as my friend Chris Long of KSTP pointed out last night, Wolves fans may not want Jaden McDaniels to be a part of that potential trade.

I loathe McDaniels’ inconsistency, but he played a starring role in last night’s 123-111 win over the NBA’s best team, Oklahoma City, at Target Center. McDaniels had 21 points and hit all five 3-pointers he took as the Wolves raced out to a 12-point lead after 12 minutes.

Anthony Edwards was great too, especially his defensive effort to go along with 26 points, five rebounds and five assists.

I don’t think they’ll trade for Giannis, and I’m not sure the Bucks will make the deal either. Outside of McDaniels, who on the Wolves is expendable and would interest Milwaukee? You’re not getting him for Rob Dillingham…

The Wolves have won three in a row - all in 96 hours - after a four-game losing streak and visit Memphis tomorrow.

Wild Earns Regulation Win Over Flames

Those overtime wins are great, but questions somewhat the legitimacy of the Wild’s status as a Cup contender. Prior to last night’s 4-1 win over Calgary, Minnesota had the same number of regulation wins (19) as the No. 30 team in the NHL.

The Wild earned an important 4-1 win over Calgary on home ice last night, even if the game tape won’t be sent to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Grinders Danila Yurov and Vinnie Hinostroza scored first-period goals and the Wolves added a couple late goals in the victory.

Ten of the Wild’s prior 17 games had gone into overtime or a shootout.

The Wild visits Edmonton in a marquee matchup tomorrow night, and then plays just twice more before the Olympic Break.

Gopher Sports

The Gopher men’s hoops team dropped their sixth straight, 67-63, at Wisconsin on Wednesday. You feel for Niko Medved’s team, which has been in five of those six games till the closing minutes. In the other, they led undefeated Nebraska by six at halftime. They’re at Penn State on Monday.

The Gopher women have won three straight after burying Penn State 87-66 on the road. They host Purdue on Sunday.

How much lower can it go for the Gopher men’s hockey team, which has lost seven in a row heading into this weekend’s home series against Wisconsin?

The Gopher women will be without Abbey Murphy and Nelli Laitinen for this weekend’s No. 1 vs. No. 3 matchup with Wisconsin, but they’ll get no sympathy from the Badgers. Wisconsin will be without four players, including starting goalie Ava McNaugthon and star defender Laila Edwards, who is the first Black woman on Team USA’s oster. That series is at Ridder beginning tonight.
