Stanzel’s Sports Takeout — BREAKING NEWS: 10.27.25

If you came here to shake off your case of the Monday’s with positive local sports news, you’re allowed to take today’s Takeout off. At least the Vikings didn’t lose Sunday…

Adrian Peterson, arrested after the Vikings draft party in April, was arrested at 10 a.m. Sunday in Sugar Land, Texas (home of the former Houston Aeros’ practice rink) for suspicion of DUI and a weapons charge.

We’ll hope the Loons can shore things up for Minnesota sports fans when they host Game 1 of a best-of-three series against Seattle tonight. Winner advances to the conference semifinal.

Wolves Win But Lose ANT to Hamstring Injury

The Wolves became the first Twin Cities based men’s team to win a game in…awhile…but they lost Anthony Edwards to a hamstring injury three minutes into a 114-108 win over an also short-staffed Indiana Pacers last night. Tough timing too, because it was the first of a back-to-back that includes rival Denver tonight. That likely means no ANT, and a tired bench. The Wolves won their 10th straight home opener.

Julius Randle picked up the slack in Edwards’ absence with 31 points and six assists. So did Rudy Gobert (19 rebounds, 13 points), and Naz Reid chipped in 16 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

The Wolves looked to have everything under control up eight with less than three minutes left, but the Pacers had gotten it down to two when Jaden McDaniels (3-for-13 from the field) sealed it with 21 ticks left.

The win helped take the sting out of a loss to the Lakers on Friday.

GWH Sweeps UMD to Set Up Huge Series in Madison; GMH Swept by Bulldogs

Next is our saving grace, the Gopher women’s hockey team. The third-ranked Gophers swept No. 4 UMD on the road, with a rally needed for a 3-2 score on Saturday. They’re 9-1, with seven wins coming against ranked teams, but they’re facing a challenge like no other this weekend in Madison. The Badgers are 10-0-0 this season with SEVEN shutiouts, including the last three straight. They’ve outscored their opponents 56-6 this season. No. 1, indeed.

The Gopher men fell to 2-5-1 overall and 1-4-1 at home with two losses to UMD. They begin B10 play this week with a Thursday-Saturday series in Madison. The Badgers are 4-0-2 and have outscored their opponents 22-9.

Wild’s OT Loss Impossible to Believe

It’s the Wild’s 25-year anniversary season, and last night’s game put a tidy bow on the last 2,000 or so games. The Wild rallied from two goals down twice, held onto the puck for 220 seconds straight in overtime yet lost seconds later on a breakaway goal by Macklin Celebrini, the only fresh Sharks player on the ice. The Sharks, who entered the game with one win this season, prevailed 6-5.

It marked the second straight night the Wild left themselves with too much to do. The night prior, Utah scored three times before most fans had sat down. Again, the Wild rallied to within one, before three goals in the third by the Mammoth sealed the deal.

Last night was just a crushing loss. Despite all that puck possession in overtime - all in the offensive zone, the Wild only got two shots from Brock Faber and a post shot by Matt Boldy. A Faber rebound kicked out towards the blueline, and Celebrini, the only Sharks player who hadn’t played the entire 3:40 of overtime, raced down the puck and beat Jesper Wallstedt.

The Wild was way too sloppy in all facets of the game (and that’s not just like last night). Kirill Kaprizov, who reached the 400-point mark (that’s as many as Zach Parise had with the Wild), was a turnover machine. The more we see of David Jiricek, the more we see why he hasn’t been able to crack the lineup since the Wild gave up a lot to get him in the middle of last season (to be fair he was injured for part of that time).

We’re 10 games in with just eight points, and the Wild has the worst goal differential in the division. The season can get away from you fast, especially when you lose the first two games of a six-game homestand. Their next two opponents, Winnipeg and Pittsburgh, are really good. The Wild also may be without Ryan Hartman, who appeared to injure his knee late in regulation. There was originally a major called on the play so they could review it (no one saw it), but the penalty was rightfully rescinded.

Gopher Football No Match for Iowa

The less said about the Gophers’ 41-3 loss at Iowa on Saturday, the better. They were outclassed, outplayed and outcoached. The 5-3 Gophers should get the perfect antidote this weekend with a home game against Michigan State. Sparty is one of four teams without a Big 10 win.
