Stanzel’s Sports Takeout — BREAKING NEWS: 10.29.25
It’ll be everyone’s favorite type of match-up, public vs. private, as Como Park Senior and Blake play in Friday’s Class AA boys soccer state championship. Como Park earned a double OT win over Simley yesterday to advance.
Wild the “Better Team” but Get Half the Points as the Other
Yes, the Wild analytically and to the eye was a much better team than Winnipeg last night. Yes, it was one of their best games of the season. But in the end none of that was enough, as they dropped their fourth straight game, 4-3 in overtime against Winnipeg on a night they celebrated their 25th anniversary.
Wearing the original white, iron range red and wheat jerseys, the Wild fell down two goals in the first period. That’s the third straight game - all at home - they’ve been down 2-0 or 3-0 early. They rallied back and eventually carried a 3-2 lead late in regulation when Gustav Nyquist, whose offside cost the Wild a playoff series, and former Wild fan favorite, Nino Niederreiter, combined to tie things up. Kyle Connor put the Wild out of its misery pretty quickly in overtime.
Minnesota is 0-2-1 on this six-game homestand that was supposed to right the ship. There are no moral victories in the NHL, and one of the league’s hottest teams the Pittsburgh Penguins come a calling on Thursday.
Wolves Lose to Nuggets without ANT
The Wolves will be without Anthony Edwards and his sore hamstring for around two weeks, and the immediate results weren’t good. Minnesota didn’t have nearly enough firepower in a 127-114 loss to Denver on Monday night.
Jamal Murray scored 43 points and Nikola Jokic added 25 and 19 rebounds as the Wolves blew an eight-point halftime deficit. Denver scored an eye-popping 45 points in the second half.
Not many NBA teams can survive the loss of an MVP candidate, but the Wolves aren’t that deep. Bones Hyland (1-for-6 from field) won’t get it done. Jaden McDaniels led the way with 25 points.
The Wolves visit the Lakers late-night tonight in a match-up of 2-2 teams.
Loons Win in Penalties, Can Advance Next Week
No one likes penalty kicks in elimination games, but the Loons are doing just fine with them thank you very much. Last year, the Loons won back-to-back first-round games in penalties, and Monday night they ended a scoreless draw with a PK win over Seattle in game one of their best-of-three series. The Sounders made a late sub just to get a good PK guy in, and he missed, so that was justice.
Game 2 is Monday in Seattle at a Central Time zone unfriendly time of 9:45. The Loons’ troubles in Seattle are well documented.
Wentz to Miss Rest of Season
Carson Wentz wasn’t sandbagging anything. He looked like he was in an incredible amount of pain against L.A., and indeed he was. Wentz will miss the rest of the season - potentially his last in the NFL - by undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum.
The Vikings insist Wentz wasn’t coerced into staying in the game. He was clearly hurt and he’s a gamer, you have to give him credit. But there’s no doubt he was injured further the more he played.
So now the Vikings travel to Detroit with either J.J. McCarthy, two games of real snaps in two NFL seasons, or Max Brosmer, who’s seen less than a quarter’s worth of action. The Vikings will probably sign a veteran QB but does Brett Rypien, former Vikings practice squad guy, really get the blood flowing?
