Stanzel’s Sports Takeout — BREAKING NEWS: 6.1.26

Vikings set to hire Seattle AGM Nolan Teasley as their GM this week. Teasley has spent 13 seasons with the Seahawks, the last four as AGM.

Gophers sign a half dozen for football, including Jordan Walley. That name sounds familiar because his brother, Justin, was a Gophers standout. Jordan is a QB in Mississippi but will play CB in college (he’s only 5-foot-9, 160 pounds).

I’ll take the Hurricanes over Vegas in five.

I know the Spurs are great - but I’m a little shocked how everyone including Vegas thinks this series is a foregone conclusion. Call me a homer, I’ll take the Knicks in seven. I can’t even remember their last loss (it was more than a month ago).

The College World Series is great, but the two weeks prior are even better. So much crazy baseball this weekend, including St. Mary’s ousting No. 1 overall seed UCLA in L.A. last night.

Lynx Remain Unbeaten on Road and atop WNBA

The Lynx kept rolling Saturday in Chicago, beating the three-win Sky 79-58 for their fourth straight win overall. Minnesota, which improved to 4-0 on the road, is a WNBA-best 6-2 this season.

Nia Coffey, primarily a bench player for Atlanta the last two seasons, scored a season-high 20 points. She’s averaging over 10 points per game in a starting spot that will likely go to Napheesa Collier when she’s healthy again.

Olivia Miles added 17 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals for the Lynx.

Minnesota’s stifling defense allowed Chicago to shoot just 29 percent from the field.

The Lynx plays at 2-7 Phoenix tonight. The Mercury has lost five straight.

Twins Swept in Pittsburgh as Ober Hurt, Woods Richardson Released

The Twins lost their pre-season No. 2 and No. 3 pitchers - one to injury and one to being awful - in the midst of getting swept in Pittsburgh. Minnesota, which a week ago was within a game of .500 - has suddenly lost five games in a row.

The Twins designated Simeon Woods Richardson for assignment on Saturday. He’d been one of the worst starters in the majors this season. It’s a little surprising to see them give up on him, especially since starting pitching is no longer at a premium in this organization.

That became the case moreso on Sunday, when Bailey Ober was put on the 15-day injured list with elbow inflammation. Ober had gotten roughed up for eight runs in a short start on Saturday. Mick Abel and Kendry Rojas are also out with injury.

This team looked blessed with good starting pitching just two months ago. But the Twins have allowed 46 runs in their last five games. They scored 17 runs against the Pirates but couldn’t manage a win.

They’ll turn to their undisputed ace, Joe Ryan, at Target Field tonight as they return home to face the White Sox after a nine-game road trip. Chicago has won five straight and took three of four from the Twins last week.
