Stanzel’s Sports Takeout — BREAKING NEWS: 7.28.25
Hamstring strain on Justin Jefferson in first 48 hours of Vikings training camp. Not too worrisome, yet…First pre-season game not until August 9 against Houston at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Kurt Kitayama won The 3M Open by a stroke, after birdieing six of the first eight holes in the final round. That’s after he tied a tournament record with a 60 in round three. Kitayama was -17 over the final two days alone.
Lynx’ Dream of Perfect Home (Regular) Season Gone
The Lynx started the season 14-0 at home (Commissioner’s Cup Final notwithstanding), but that run ended last night in a 90-86 loss to the Atlanta Dream. The Dream spurted to a 14-point lead at halftime, and the Lynx never fully recovered.
Napheesa Collier poured in 32 points - Lynx losses are rarely her fault. The Dream’s nine-point advantage at the free throw line was the difference.
The Lynx host the New York Liberty on Wednesday, their first matchup since the WNBA Final. The top two teams in the WNBA meet four times in 21 days..
Twins Drop Two of Three, See Something in Zebby Matthews
The best news of the Twins weekend - in which they lost two of three to the Nationals - was Zebby Matthews’ strong start Friday in a 1-0 win. He allowed two hits over six innings. Matthews came up for awhile in 2024, and has the looks of a No. 4 starter behind Lopez, Ryan and Ober next year.
Speaking of Joe Ryan, the second best thing to happen to the Twins may have been Ryan getting rocked on Saturday. That won’t help trade value, and does this team really have an embarrassment of riches enough to trade a top of the line starter? Not like two or three prospects is going to refill all the holes they need to fill.
Three-game set with Boston on tap before the deadline. I’d expect a firesale of pending free agents, but the Twins will have to be bowled over to touch Ryan or Jhoan Duran.
Byron Buxton is day-to-day with soreness in his side. Bailey Ober is returning soon.
Yeboah Scores PK Late to Give Loons 2-1 Win
The Loons won for the first time in three games, beating St. Louis on the road 2-1 Saturday in come-from-behind fashion. It was Kelvin Yeboah - who else - whose second penalty kick goal of the game in the 90th minute gave the Loons the win.
Minnesota, two points off the Western Conference lead, hits the Leagues Cup group stage playing host to Queretaro on Wednesday. The Leagues Cup matches MLS against Liga MX of Mexico. Minnesota plays Club America on Saturday in game two of the group stage.
