Stanzel’s Sports Takeout — BREAKING NEWS: 8.11.25
Good morning from midtown Manhattan. MJ is as good as advertised. I’ll be at Yankees/Twins in the Bronx tonight.
Vikings Win Pre-Season Opener 20-10
You’ve got to feel for Rondale Moore. The wide receiver missed all of last season with a leg injury, and the new Viking suffered a “significant” injury in his first game for the purple Saturday, a 20-10 pre-season win for the Vikes over Houston at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Moore got injured on a punt return, and it adds to serious depth concerns for the Vikings, who will be without suspended Jordan Addison early on.
J.J. McCarthy was fine - he played one series and led the Vikings to a field goal. Not sure we’re going to see him again this pre-season with only two more games, so his play will remain a concern and at top of mind heading into Week 1.
Sam Howell, acquired for a fifth-round pick to be McCarthy’s backup, completed 11-of-13 passes to put a stranglehold on that QB2 position.
If you haven’t had enough mediocre pre-season football, get on down to U.S. Bank Stadium for some discounted tickets against the Patriots this Saturday at noon.
Lynx Beat Liberty in First of Three
It’s all but over for the rest of the WNBA, as the Lynx’ 83-71 win at New York yesterday gave them a 6.5 game lead with 12 games left in the regular season. Four different Lynx plays scored in double figures, led by Kayla McBride as Napheesa Collier remains out with an ankle sprain.
The Lynx has a six-day break for some ungodly reason (WNBA schedule makers must be using AI) until the teams’ second of three straight meetings, Saturday at Target Center.
Twins Take Two of Three from Royals
Wouldn’t it be something if this Twins team stayed around just a little bit longer.
The Twins took two of three at home against Kansas City, including a 5-3, 11-inning win yesterday, and believe it or not are just 5.5 games back of the wild card. They’re unlikely to get much closer, but the Yankees are struggling right now…the Twins just took two of three from the division-leading Tigers, and the Athletics are one of the worst teams in baseball.
Who else but Luke Keaschall hit the two-run, game-winning homer in the 11th. He’s got 17 hits in 41 at bats this season, including six doubles and two home runs.
It’ll be Zebby Matthews versus Will Warren in a barnburner at Yankee Stadium tonight.
