Ryan Bad Again as Twins Drop Third Straight
The Twins bettered their bullpen without giving up anyone on their major league roster, but it won’t matter if Joe Ryan completes another second-half meltdown.
Ryan was shellacked for a third straight post All-Star start in an 8-2 loss at Kansas City last night.
Ryan is 0-3 in his last three starts, allowing 17 runs in 15 ⅓ innings. It’s unfortunately a known bug. Last year, Ryan was 0-3 with a 6.75 ERA in three September starts, after a poor August. In 2024, July was his breaking point before getting injured. In 2023, Ryan had a 6.39 ERA in July, an 8.00 in August and a 5.28 in September.
The Twins added Jeff Hoffman from the Blue Jays prior to Monday’s deadline. Hoffman is a veteran who is a former closer and still a very solid reliever. He’s actually a former Twin - so long ago that his current bullpen coach, LaTroy Hawkins, was a teammate. All told, the Twins gave up some lower prospects and only one top 10 prospect in their three deals before the deadline.
They’re still only a game out of the Wild Card despite three straight losses, but they’re four out of the Central race.
Dean Kremer makes his first Twins start tonight in K.C. Kremer’s last start for Baltimore was a 14-0 loss, in which he allowed eight runs in four innings. He’s 1-4 with a 6.50 ERA this year after four solid seasons in Baltimore.
Loons Drop Leagues Cup Opener
The Loons hoped the Leagues Cup would be a fresh start for their struggling team, but instead it began with a 2-1 loss to FC Juarez. The Loons will need to win their final two Leagues Cup games - starting Friday against Tigres - to have any shot at advancing.
The Loons have still only played three games that have counted in the MLS standings since May 23. Because last night’s game came just 72 hours after a regular season game against San Diego, there were plenty of substitutions and you can’t really take the result seriously. The Leagues Cup has got to go…
